Cloud Chats on Google: Recently, several reports surfaced that chats made with Anthropic's Cloud chatbot were visible on Google. The chats available on Google included sensitive information such as crypto wallet details, API keys, resumes, and company documents. When screenshots surfaced, many users claimed that data from Anthropic had been leaked, making the chats publicly available on Google. In reality, this is not a data leak or hack. Private chats on Cloud remain private. The chats that have appeared on Google belong to users who have used Cloud's public share feature, which converts the chats into a publicly accessible webpage.
Where did the matter start?
Users on Reddit reported that Cloud chats could be accessed by entering a simple query into Google Search. Some called it a privacy failure and linked it to a data leak, while others claimed that the chats were made public through the share feature. Many users posted screenshots of the incident on Twitter, calling it a privacy issue. This sparked a lengthy debate.
How did the conversation about Claude reach Google search?
While this isn't a data leak, the question arises: how did these chats end up indexed on Google Search? In fact, when a user using Cloud clicks "share," the chatbots create a public webpage of the conversation. Anyone can open this page and read the chat. The problem began when these webpages began appearing in Google Search, making it easier to read other users' chats. Initially, it was reported that Anthropic had forgotten to add a noindex tag to the webpage, but later analysis revealed that Anthropic had blocked search engines from crawling its shared page. While this prevents search engines like Google from reading the chats on the webpage, this method cannot prevent the URL of the webpage from being indexed. This is why many webpages began appearing in Google and Bing search results. Now, by clicking on these pages, anyone can read the shared chats.
Is this a matter of concern?
If you're a Cloud user and use the Share feature, this is obviously a cause for concern, but if you've never used it, you shouldn't worry. If you've used it before and now want to delete your chats, Anthropic has explained how. Go to the chatbot's settings and open the Privacy section. Here, you'll see the Shared Chats option. By tapping this option, you can review or remove the chats.
What information was present in the chats found on Google?
According to reports, the webpages indexed on Google contained information such as crypto wallets, access credentials, resumes, company documents, legal queries, and general conversations. As the issue gained traction, users reported that the webpages gradually disappeared from Google Search. Subsequently, these pages have also been removed from Bing and other browsers. Note that removing pages from Google Search does not disable the links to the webpages. This means that users who already have the URLs can access them at any time.
A similar incident happened with OpenAI.
Anthropic isn't the first company to face this kind of incident. Last year, OpenAI also experimentally rolled out a feature that allowed users to make their shared conversations discoverable on search engines. When these chats began to be listed on Google Search, the company quickly shut down the feature.
