The Rajasthan Royals (RR) surprised many before the IPL 2025 mega auction by not retaining several veteran players. Among them was England's star batsman Jos Buttler, a decision that sparked strong reactions from cricket experts and fans. Now, fresh reports suggest that Buttler was not only released but also misled by the franchise.
Buttler Promised Retention, Then Dropped
Jos Buttler had been with Rajasthan Royals since 2020, delivering consistent performances year after year. In IPL 2022, he scored over 850 runs, including four centuries, and played a key role in taking Rajasthan to their first final since 2008. In the following two seasons, he continued his strong form, scoring over 350 runs each season while opening the innings.
According to a report by Sports Tak, Rajasthan Royals’ management had assured Buttler just two days before the retention deadline that he would be kept on. Buttler, trusting the team, agreed to the retention. However, when the final list was announced, his name was missing. What shocked many was that after this decision, the franchise allegedly did not even communicate with him further, leading to accusations of disrespect and betrayal.
Rajasthan Struggling Without Buttler
Rajasthan Royals are feeling the impact of Buttler’s absence. This season, they have won only 2 out of their 9 matches and are placed 8th on the points table. The team has struggled particularly while chasing targets in the closing overs — a situation where Buttler often made the difference in previous seasons.
Meanwhile, Buttler, now playing for Gujarat Titans, is in brilliant form. He has scored 356 runs in 8 matches, including three half-centuries, helping Gujarat to the top spot in the points table with 6 wins out of 8 matches.
