Rainfall Update: Heavy Rain Expected in Delhi for the Next Two Days

In a weather update from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy rain is expected to lash Delhi over the next two days, with thundershowers forecasted for January 22 and 23. After this period of rainfall, dense fog will prevail across the city for the remainder of the week. The changing weather conditions are set to affect daily life, particularly the city's air quality and visibility.

Temperature and Air Quality:

  • Maximum Temperature: 23°C to 26°C
  • Minimum Temperature: 8°C to 9°C

As the city experiences a cold wave, the Air Quality Index (AQI) has deteriorated, reaching the "very poor" category. On Monday morning, at 6 AM, the AQI was recorded at 349, marking a significant air quality concern. Several areas across Delhi are experiencing alarming levels of pollution, with readings as high as 407 in Anand Vihar.

Rainfall Forecast for Delhi:

  • January 22-23: Heavy rain with thundershowers expected across Delhi.
  • Post-January 23: Foggy conditions will take over, with the possibility of moderate fog in certain regions.

Air Quality Outlook:

Delhi's air quality is expected to remain in the "very poor" to "poor" category over the next few days. The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) reported that on Sunday, the 24-hour AQI averaged at 368, a marked rise from the previous day, highlighting the worsening pollution levels.

Due to the favorable meteorological conditions and strong winds, air quality is expected to improve slightly in the coming days. However, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has decided to cancel phase-III measures under the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). Phase-I and II measures, however, will continue to address the rising pollution levels.

CPCB Bulletin Summary:

  • AQI at 4 PM Sunday: 368, indicating a "very poor" status.
  • AQI Increase: From 255 (Saturday) to 368 (Sunday), a rise of over 100 points.
  • GRAP Phase-III Revocation: Given the favorable weather conditions, GRAP Phase-III measures, which would have imposed stricter restrictions, were revoked on January 16.

What’s Next?

The weather in Delhi remains challenging with heavy rain and poor air quality, making it essential for residents to take precautions, especially those with respiratory conditions. The government is intensifying efforts under the existing air quality management plan to mitigate the effects of the pollution in the coming days.
