According to a study published in 'The Lancet Infectious Diseases Journal', 3 out of every 4 cases of animal bites involve dogs and in India, rabies is estimated to cause the death of more than 5,700 people every year.
How many people have rabies infection?
The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) conducted a survey in 60 districts of 15 states across the country from March 2022 to August 2023. During this, 3,37,808 people in more than 78,800 families were asked about animal bites in the family, anti-rabies vaccine and deaths due to animal bites.
Dogs are most responsible
Several researchers, including those from the ICMR-National Institute of Epidemiology, Chennai, found that dogs were responsible for 3 out of every 4 incidents of animal bites.
Estimation of animal bite cases
Over 2,000 people surveyed reported previous animal bites, of which 76.8 percent (1,576) were dog bites. In addition, the authors of the study said that 6 out of every 1,000 people have been bitten by an animal, "which means that at the national level, 9.1 million people have been bitten by animals."
How many people die of rabies?
He said, "We estimate that 5,726 people die of rabies in India every year." The research author said that these estimates can help understand whether the country is on track to meet the global target of eliminating cases of rabies transmitted from dogs to humans by 2030.
