Obesity is responsible for 10-15% of cancer cases, know how to prevent it before time

Link Between Obesity and Cancer : Obesity is responsible for about 10-15% of cancer cases worldwide. The main reason for this can be metabolic and hormonal changes. However, some changes in lifestyle such as balanced diet, physical activity, improvement in metabolism, good sleep and stress management can reduce obesity and related health problems.

Cancer Risk Factor : Obesity is an important risk factor for cancer, accounting for approximately 10-15% of cancer cases worldwide. Studies have found that obesity is associated with many types of cancer, such as breast cancer, colorectal cancer, pancreatic cancer, ovarian cancer in women and prostate cancer in men. In an exclusive interview with Dr Neeraj Goyal (Director, Oncology Services, GI Oncology, GI and HPB Surgery) of CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, he explains the relationship between obesity and cancer risk.

The link between obesity and cancer

The main connection between obesity and cancer comes from metabolic and hormonal changes in the body. A major cause is insulin resistance, which increases the production of insulin-like growth factors (IGFs). High levels of IGFs promote cell growth and decrease cell death (apoptosis), increasing the risk of cancer development. In addition, chronic inflammation caused by excess fat tissue damages DNA, further increasing cancer risk. Changes in the gut microbiota due to obesity also increase inflammation, which can create the perfect environment for cancer development.

Prevention of obesity-related cancers

The good news is that obesity-related cancers can be prevented by adopting a healthy lifestyle. A balanced diet is essential to maintain a balanced weight. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains provides the body with essential nutrients and antioxidants. It also helps in reducing inflammation and oxidative stress. Daily physical activity also plays an important role in cancer prevention. Exercising for at least 30 minutes a day improves metabolism and reduces fat, which reduces the risk of cancer to a great extent. Adequate sleep and stress management are also important in reducing obesity and related health problems. Poor sleep and high stress cause hormonal imbalances, which increase weight gain and inflammation, which increases the risk of cancer.

Healthy Lifestyle

Individuals can reduce the risk of obesity-related cancers by adopting a healthy lifestyle. This includes a healthy diet, daily exercise, adequate sleep, and stress management. Individuals can reduce obesity and also reduce the risk of obesity-related cancers.
