Medanta specialist Dr Saurabh Mehrotra told TOI, "Stress, anxiety and mood swings are often linked to a hectic lifestyle or lack of sleep, but in many cases, nutritional deficiencies can also be the cause. The brain needs adequate vitamins and minerals to produce neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine and GABA, which regulate mood and focus."
Effects of Vitamin D deficiency
Vitamin D deficiency often strikes silently. It's considered essential for bones, but it also impacts mental health. Factors like lack of sunlight in cities, prolonged periods at home or in the office, and pollution can all reduce vitamin D levels in the body. This can lead to fatigue, lethargy, and mood swings. According to Dr. Mehrotra, this is one of the most common deficiencies and can also lead to symptoms similar to depression.
Vitamin B12 deficiency
Vitamin B12 deficiency can develop gradually. Signs include persistent fatigue, blurred vision, and poor concentration. This problem is particularly common in vegetarians, the elderly, and those with digestive problems. Vitamin B12 is essential for proper nerve and brain function, so a deficiency can also affect emotional well-being.

Similarly, vitamins B6 and folate are essential for the brain. They help produce chemicals that keep us calm and balanced. Their deficiencies often manifest as emotional imbalances, not physical ones. Magnesium is considered the body's natural calming agent. A deficiency can lead to restlessness, headaches, sleeplessness, and increased anxiety. Iron deficiency reduces oxygen supply to the brain, leading to fatigue, lack of concentration, and mood swings. However, a low mood isn't always due to nutritional deficiencies. Dr. Mehrotra says that anxiety and stress can be caused by many factors.
