Monsoon Spice Storage Tips: Moisture in spices during the rainy season can cause mold and mildew. Prevent spoilage by drying and storing spices properly.

Tips to Store Spices in Monsoon
The rainy season brings as much relief from the heat as it does a significant increase in humidity. This has a direct impact on our kitchen supplies, especially spices. Spices like turmeric, chili, coriander, and cumin absorb moisture, causing them to form lumps, lose their aroma, and sometimes even develop mold. Most people are forced to throw away all their spices. However, you'll be relieved to know that with a little knowledge and common sense, you can make these spices reusable. Let's learn how to reuse spices damaged by moisture during the rainy season.
Remove moisture with sunlight and mild heat.
If the spices have slightly become damp and haven't yet developed mold, the first and easiest method is to dry them in the sun. Spread the spices out on a clean, dry plate or newspaper and expose them to sunlight for 2 to 3 hours. This evaporates the moisture, leaving them dry and fragrant again. Another major problem during monsoons is the lack of sunlight. Therefore, the best solution is to roast the spices in a pan over low heat. While doing this, you need to be careful not to overdo it, as this will cause the spices to taste bitter and their color will be affected. Furthermore, after roasting the spices, they should be repacked in a container only after they have cooled, as moisture can build up again.
Sometimes spices become so wet that they form small, hard lumps, especially with turmeric and chili powder. In such a situation, dry the spices first in the sun or on low heat, then grind them finely in a mixer. After grinding, strain them through a fine sieve to remove any large pieces. The only thing to keep in mind is that if the spices are excessively moldy or smell bad, it's wise to discard them, as they can be harmful to health.
Store properly to prevent moisture re-introduction.
The matter doesn't end there. Once spices have been dried, it's essential to protect them from moisture. For this, you should pay attention to their storage method. Always keep your spices in an airtight container or glass container, keeping it tightly closed. Also, ensure that the container is completely dry, otherwise, moisture may reappear. The storage location also makes a difference. Therefore, the container should not be kept near the gas stove or sink, but should be kept in a dry place.
