CDSCO issues a major warning: over-the-counter medication can cause kidney failure

The CDSCO circular clearly states that uncontrolled use of these drugs can lead to dangerous conditions such as kidney failure. Taking these drugs without medical advice can prove fatal.

CDSCO issued advisory

If you, too, go straight to the medical store and take painkillers or antibiotic pills whenever you have a mild headache, body ache, or fever, then this news is a major red alert for you. The country's largest drug regulatory body, CDSCO (Central Drugs Standard Control Organization), has issued a strict circular to ban the indiscriminate use of painkillers and antibiotics. The government has warned that continued use of these drugs without medical advice is making people more susceptible to chronic kidney disease.

Painkillers and antibiotics pose a direct threat to the kidneys.

According to health experts, taking painkillers and antibiotics unnecessarily or for long periods of time can cause serious damage to kidney tissue. The CDSCO circular clearly states that uncontrolled use of these medications is leading to dangerous conditions like kidney failure. Furthermore, repeated, unnecessary antibiotic use increases antimicrobial resistance, which means that in the event of a serious illness in the future, the medications may no longer be effective.

Medical stores selling medicines without a prescription will be tightened.

To prevent this potentially fatal misuse of prescription drugs, the CDSCO has issued strict measures. Medical store operators will no longer be able to sell painkillers and antibiotics without a valid prescription. The circular states that these drugs should only be sold under medical supervision. To this end, drug inspectors and state drug controllers across the country have been instructed to take strict action against medical stores that violate the rules.

Advice to the public: Don't become a self-proclaimed doctor; don't risk your life.

The Health Department has also appealed to the general public not to self-medicate for minor ailments. In case of any pain or infection, consult a qualified doctor first. Take the prescribed dosage for the prescribed time. Increasing your medication dosage on your own or skipping it halfway through can be extremely harmful to your kidneys and overall health.
