Lung cancer is no longer just a disease of smokers, these people are also at greater risk

Today is World Cancer Day and on this occasion a shocking news has come to light. For a long time it has been believed that lung cancer occurs only in smokers. But a new research has completely changed this notion. A study in Lancet has revealed that lung cancer is now increasing rapidly even in non-smokers.

According to a study published in the Lancet Respiratory Medicine journal, cases of lung cancer are increasing rapidly even without smoking and a major reason for this can be air pollution. This research has been done by scientists of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the World Health Organization (WHO). In this, data from the Global Cancer Observatory 2022 was analyzed, which found that lung cancer called Adenocarcinoma is most commonly found in non-smokers. The research also revealed that in 2022, 53-70% of the total cases of lung cancer worldwide were found in people who never smoked.

What is Adenocarcinoma

Adenocarcinoma is a type of lung cancer that develops in the glands that produce mucus and digestive fluids in the body. This cancer is increasing rapidly especially in women and Asian countries. The study also states that this type of lung cancer has very little connection with smoking, but air pollution and fine particles (PM 2.5) present in the atmosphere can be a major cause of it.

Air pollution is becoming the cause of cancer!

According to researchers, air pollution is a major contributor to the increasing cases of lung cancer worldwide. Especially pollutant particles like PM 2.5 penetrate deep into the lungs and damage the cells and increase the risk of cancer. In 2022, 80,378 cases of women suffering from lung cancer were found to be directly related to air pollution.

Women and Asian countries are at greater risk!

The study also revealed that non-smokers account for a fifth of all deaths due to lung cancer. This problem is increasing rapidly especially among women and Asian countries. IARC chief scientist Freddy Bray said that changing smoking habits and air pollution are the two main factors behind the increasing cases of lung cancer today. To avoid this, governments will have to implement tobacco control and air pollution control policies.
