Depression in itself is harmful for health, such a situation can break you from inside, but a new study has revealed that your desire to eat carb rich foods may increase.

Carbohydrate Cravings Linked To Depression: To maintain good health, it has been advised to stay away from anxiety, but now another reason will inspire you to stay happy. People suffering from depression may crave carbohydrate rich food items, which may also have a connection with their mental health condition. This information has come to light in a study.
Cravings increase in depression.
According to the study, patients suffering from depression who are constantly in low mood also feel less hungry, but various researchers including researchers from University of Bonn, Germany said that people suffering from severe depression sometimes develop craving for food.
How was the research done?
Nils Kroemer, a researcher of this study and professor of medical psychology at the University Hospital Bonn, said, "These changes can also lead to changes in body weight." This study, published in the journal Psychological Medicine, included groups of 117 participants - 54 of whom were depressed while 63 were healthy people.
These people were asked to complete a 'food cue reactivity task', in which 60 food items and 20 non-food items were rated on the basis of whether they 'wanted' or 'liked' them. Researchers found that depressed people had a reduced 'desire' for food, but not a reduction in 'liking'.
According to the study results
, the researchers said, "Patients with severe depression liked and rated high fat and high protein food items less compared to carbohydrate rich foods." They also found that such patients also had more cravings for fat and carbohydrate rich foods, such as milk chocolate.
Lilly Thurn, a postgraduate student at Maastricht University in the Netherlands, said that while cravings for carbohydrate-rich foods are generally associated with increased hunger, studies have shown that carbohydrate cravings are more strongly associated with the overall severity of depression, particularly anxiety symptoms.
