According to him, alcohol can increase dehydration in the body, which further increases the risk of stone formation in the long run. Dr. Jatin Kothari, consultant nephrologist at P.D. Hinduja Hospital and Medical Research Centre in Mumbai, told TOI that people assume that beer, being a liquid, will keep the body hydrated. However, alcohol actually has the exact opposite effect. Alcohol acts as a diuretic in the body, meaning it causes the body to excrete excess water through frequent urination. Therefore, if a person is not drinking enough water and relies solely on beer, it can lead to dehydration.
Increased risk of weight gain and metabolic syndrome
According to Dr. Kothari, dehydration causes the minerals in urine to become more concentrated, increasing the risk of kidney stone formation. This means that what people consider a cure can often worsen the problem. Experts also say that beer not only increases dehydration but can also increase uric acid levels in the body. High uric acid levels are considered a major cause of uric acid stone formation. Furthermore, drinking excessive amounts of beer can increase the risk of weight gain and metabolic syndrome, which can further worsen kidney stone problems.
Dr. Kothari explains that many people turn to beer instead of water, thinking it will flush their kidneys. However, the combination of dehydration and alcohol can worsen the situation.
