If you frequently crave for sweets, do not ignore it thinking it is just a food habit. A new research has revealed that the desire to eat more sweets can be linked to mental health, especially depression and anxiety.
Researchers from Germany's University Hospital Bonn (UKB), University of Bonn, and University Hospital Tubingen found that patients with depression have less appetite, but they are more attracted to carbohydrates, i.e. sweet foods.
Until now it was believed that the desire to eat more carbs was due to excessive hunger, but this study proved this belief wrong. Researchers said that the desire for sweet foods is linked to depression and especially the level of anxiety.
What is the connection between depression and eating habits?
According to researchers, people who are suffering from depression eat sweets to improve their mood. In depression, people usually either eat less or more. In such a situation, carbohydrates and sweet substances become a means to maintain their mental balance.
According to clinical nutritionist Dr. Tejas Limaye, people suffering from depression consider food as an emotional support. But this can become a dangerous habit. Such people should consume natural sweeteners (like fruits and dry fruits) and not processed sugar.
How do carbs increase the symptoms of depression?
Sugar activates the brain's reward system, which makes you feel good for a while. But eating too much sweets can imbalance blood sugar levels, which can further deteriorate mental health. It increases a substance called tryptophan in the body, which releases serotonin and melatonin hormones, which control mood and sleep.
What should people suffering from depression eat?
* Protein rich diet - eggs, meat, tofu, dairy products
* Probiotics - yogurt and fermented foods, which improve gut health
* Natural sweet foods - fruits, jaggery and dry fruits
* Balanced diet - vegetables, whole grains and healthy fats
