These days intermittent fasting is quite a trend. Most people do intermittent fasting to reduce obesity. Research has shown that intermittent fasting can be harmful for teenagers.

Intermittent Fasting: These days most people do intermittent fasting to lose weight. Intermittent fasting helps in reducing weight rapidly. Recent research has found that intermittent fasting is not good for teenagers. Intermittent fasting can affect the growth of their cells.
What is intermittent fasting
Scientists from Germany's Technical University of Munich (TUM), LMU Hospital Munich and Helmholtz Munich said that the effects of intermittent fasting may vary according to age. Intermittent fasting means that a person eats only within 6 to 8 hours every day and fasts the rest of the time. It is considered helpful in preventing diabetes and heart disease and also helps in reducing weight.
Intermittent fasting is dangerous for teenagers
A recent study published in the journal Cell Reports found that long-term intermittent fasting hindered the growth of insulin-producing cells (beta cells) in young mice. Researcher Professor Stefan Herzig said, "Our study clearly shows that intermittent fasting can be beneficial for adults, but it may pose some risks for children and adolescents.
Research done on mice
In this study, adolescent, adult and elderly mice were kept without food for one day and given a normal diet for the next two days. After ten weeks, it was seen that the sensitivity to insulin increased in the body of adult and elderly mice, which improved their metabolism. This is necessary to control the level of sugar in the blood and prevent type 2 diabetes. But in adolescent mice, the functionality of beta cells decreased, which reduced insulin production. Lack of insulin can cause diabetes and other metabolic problems.
According to researcher Leonardo Matta, "It is generally believed that intermittent fasting is beneficial for beta cells, but we found that younger mice were producing less insulin after prolonged fasting. When scientists tried to find out the reason for this, they found that the beta cells of younger mice could not develop completely. When this research was compared with human tissue data, it was found that the development of beta cells can also be disrupted in patients with type 1 diabetes.
