Underwater Power Cable: Electricity will flow between India and Dubai

India-UAE: A proposal to lay a 1,600-kilometer power cable between India and the United Arab Emirates is being considered. The project is expected to cost ₹40,000 crore, Union Energy Minister Manohar Lal Khattar announced during India Energy Storage Week. This mega project is a key part of Prime Minister Narendra Modi 's "One Sun, One World, One Grid" (OSOWOG) vision, which aims to enhance cross-border power connectivity and strengthen clean energy sources (solar energy, wind energy) globally.

1600km long pipe will be laid

This power cable will be approximately 1,600 kilometers long and will transfer 2 gigawatts of electricity. The cable will connect Gujarat (Bhuj) in India directly to the UAE coast via the Arabian Sea. High-voltage direct current cables will be laid at a depth of 3,000–3,500 meters. The project is being implemented by the state-owned Power Grid Corporation, which is expected to complete it in approximately 5–6 years.

India's emphasis on global connectivity

The Energy Minister says that India is working on this vision not only with the UAE, but also with several other countries in the region. First among these is Saudi Arabia, with which India has signed a deal worth ₹47,000 crore for an undersea cable project. Furthermore, India plans to expand its power grid network to Sri Lanka, Singapore, and Europe in the future, making international electricity trade as easy as anything else.

Through this project, India will be able to export surplus renewable energy to Gulf countries after meeting its own needs. This will also facilitate the supply of electricity across different time zones. For example, if it is nighttime in India, electricity can be drawn from Gulf countries, while India can send electricity to them during the day. This will strengthen trade between the two countries, strengthen diplomatic relations, and advance both countries economically.
