We all know that global tensions affect the entire world. A recent example is the tensions in the Middle East, which have impacted the entire world. The shortage of LPG cylinders is one such issue. However, the government has now introduced several regulations to reduce its use. The government itself is going to help people shift from LPG to PNG. The government is offering a special subsidy for purchasing a piped natural gas connection, or PNG. What exactly is this scheme and how will it work? Let's find out in detail.
What is the purpose of the scheme?
The government wants to promote PNG connections and has approved a new incentive scheme. The aim of this scheme is to provide cheap cooking fuel to maximum number of households across the country. This scheme named 'Incentive Scheme for Promotion of Household PNG Connection' will be implemented from September 1, 2026. For your information, let us tell you that currently there are about 1.74 crore household PNG connections in India. Under this new initiative, city gas distribution companies will be encouraged to convert existing unbilled connections into active, billed connections and expand their PNG network.
Gas Distribution at Lower Rates
To promote domestic PNG connections, CGD companies will receive 200 standard cubic meters of more affordable, domestically produced APM gas for every newly activated and billed domestic PNG connection, over a period of time, under the APM/NAPM Incentive Scheme. This will enable companies to reduce their dependence on expensive imported gas and use more competitively priced LNG, thereby helping reduce their overall costs.
According to the government, this scheme could reduce the payback period for capital expenditure on domestic PNG connections from approximately 10 years to approximately three years. This will provide a greater incentive for CGD companies to expand their networks and connect more homes. The scheme will be implemented in two phases over a period of six months.
What will consumers benefit from?
With lower costs, companies are expected to reduce the initial installation charge or security deposit required by customers. They will also focus on activating connections that were not used after pipelines were laid.
PNG provides an alternative to traditional cooking fuels by delivering gas directly to homes through pipelines. It offers greater convenience than LPG, as customers don't need to book, store, or exchange cylinders and are billed based on their actual metered consumption. This saves significant effort and can be more cost-effective than LPG.
