Cancer can be treated with proton arc therapy, research claims, know how it is beneficial

Cancer cases are increasing rapidly all over the world including India. Many new therapies are also coming for the treatment of this disease. Meanwhile, a research has been done on proton arc therapy in America. It has been told that this therapy can prove beneficial in treating cancer.

The World Health Organization report shows that in the year 2023, more than 14 lakh new cases of cancer were reported in India. Cases of lung cancer in men and breast cancer in women are increasing. As the cases of the disease are increasing, new treatment techniques are also coming in the same way. Now American scientists have developed a technique that can treat cancer present on delicate parts of the body. This technique has been named Spot-Scanning Proton Arc Therapy (SPArc). The therapy is also called Proton Arc Therapy.

This technique has been successfully used in clinical trials conducted in America. Proton beams have been used in this technique. These move around the body of the cancer patient and eliminate the tumor with utmost precision. Although it is still a trial, but this treatment is giving a ray of hope. The research done on this therapy has been published in the International Journal of Particle.

How is proton arc therapy different?

This therapy has fewer side effects than other therapies. In other therapies like radio and chemotherapy, even the healthy tissues around the tumor are exposed to radiation. The patient faces problems like hair loss, fatigue, irritation, pain and vomiting. On the other hand, in proton arc therapy, only cancer cells are attacked and it does not affect the surrounding tissues. This technique is especially beneficial for tumors that occur in the brain, eye or spinal cord.

Will the common people get the benefit soon?

Dr. Albert Them, a scientist involved in the research, says that right now there are only clinical trials, but in the coming times, arc therapy can prove to be a big game changer in the treatment of cancer. Right now this technique is being used in limited centers, but as the research progresses, it will be used on more and more patients. If it proves to be completely successful, then in the coming times there can be a new revolution in the treatment of cancer.
