Actually, any board can select a maximum of 15 players for the World Cup. Andrew McDonald, head coach of Australia's World Cup 2023 winning team, has demanded that permission be given to select 17 players.
In 2023, India and Australia, who reached the final, had to play 11 matches, but in 2027, they may have to play up to 15 matches, including the final. Each team will have to play at least 13 of these matches, including the final itself. This time, the number of teams has increased by four. In the last edition held in India, 10 teams played, but this time the total number of teams has been increased to 14. There will be a total of 57 matches. This time, after the group stage, there will be a Super-7 round, followed by the semi-finals, whereas previously, the semi-finals were played directly after the group stage.
Speaking to SEN Radio, Australia's Andrew McDonald said, "If this is going to be the biggest event, what will the team size be? In the last World Cup, we had a lot of dilemmas in selecting 15 players. New Zealand was in the same situation and many of their players were injured. We can play only 12-13 players at the beginning of the tournament so that other players can play later. You cannot play the team as you want. Situations change a lot at many places."
It's worth noting that Travis Head was injured in the 2023 ODI World Cup, which prevented him from playing initially. He later returned and played a crucial innings in the final, helping Australia win the title. To avoid such problems, he has demanded that the number of players in the squad be increased.
McDonald cited the FIFA World Cup, where squad sizes are limited to 26, while a team only plays a maximum of eight matches. He said, "I believe that when you play consecutive matches, you don't want it to be detrimental. You want to play with your favorite players. There should be discussion about increasing the number of players in the squad."
The coach believes that if the squad has a large number of players, you can go with those who are stars but whose chances of playing are 50-50 due to injury. It's unlikely that the ICC will decide to increase the number of players in the squads. However, it will be ensured that each team has at least a two-day break between matches.
