Amazon Kindle Update
Amazon Kindle update: Big news for e-book readers. Amazon has announced a much-needed change for users of older Kindle devices. The company has decided that starting May 20, 2026, many Kindle Store features will be discontinued on older Kindle e-readers and Kindle Fire tablets. According to reports, this change will specifically apply to devices launched in 2012 or earlier. After this, users will no longer be able to purchase, download, or borrow new books directly from these devices.
Which devices will be affected?
This decision affects early Kindle models, including the first Kindle launched in 2007, the Kindle DX and DX Graphite (2009 and 2010), the Kindle Keyboard (2010), the Kindle 4 (2011), the Kindle Touch (2011), the Kindle 5 (2012), the first-generation Kindle Paperwhite (2012), and the first-generation Kindle Fire (2011), the Kindle Fire 2nd Generation (2012), the Kindle Fire HD 7 (2012), and the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 (2012).
You can read pre-downloaded books.
The saving grace for users is that books already downloaded to their devices will be read without any issues. Furthermore, purchased e-books will be accessible through the Kindle mobile app, Kindle Web, or on a new Kindle device. However, if an old device was reset or deregistered after May 20th, it will no longer be re-registered.
Information will be sent to users.
According to the report, Amazon will inform affected users of this change via email. This will also explain which features will be discontinued and which will remain. Amazon may also offer offers to encourage users to purchase new Kindle devices. Users upgrading from older devices may receive up to a 20 percent discount on their new Kindle and a $20 e-book credit. This credit will be valid for a limited period. If users log in to a new device with their old account, all previously purchased books will be readily available on the new Kindle.
