5 reasons why Chennai Super Kings could not make it to the playoffs

Once again, Chennai Super Kings' dream of reaching the playoffs fell short. For the second consecutive time, the team failed to qualify. IPL 2026 proved to be a nightmare for the Chennai Super Kings. Chennai managed to win only six matches this season. Here's what led to the five-time champions failing to reach the final four.

1- Player injuries

The biggest reason for the Chennai Super Kings' failure to reach the playoffs was player injuries. Nathan Ellis was ruled out of the tournament due to injury, while the injury of Ayush Mhatre, who appeared to be in good form, was a major blow. Khalil Ahmed also got injured after playing five matches, while Jamie Overton, who was making significant contributions with both bat and ball, also withdrew from IPL 2026 due to injury at a crucial time.

2- Young players disappointed

Chennai Super Kings made a big bet on several young players for IPL 2026. Prashanth Veer and Kartik Sharma were acquired for over ₹14 crore each. However, both players failed to live up to expectations this season. Urvil Patel also managed just one half-century this season.

3- The captain has been a consistent flop

Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad has consistently struggled with his batting. Gaikwad was the team's mainstay, but he disappointed every time. In IPL 2026, Gaikwad managed to score only 337 runs at a strike rate of 123.

4. Finishers Dewald Brewis and Shivam Dube have failed to live up to expectations.

Dewald Brevis was expected to deliver a stellar performance in IPL 2026. However, Brevis failed to live up to the team's expectations. He scored 151 runs in 11 matches at a strike rate of just 127. Brevis failed to score a single half-century in IPL 2026. Shivam Dube, meanwhile, also failed to deliver as a finisher this time around.

5- Lack of experience in the bowling department

The Chennai Super Kings' bowling department's lack of experience was clearly evident this season. Anshul Kamboj was Chennai's main bowler, but he lacked experience. With Khalil Ahmed's departure, the team's fast bowling attack looked even weaker. Spencer Johnson and Gurjapneet Singh also suffered similarly. In the spin department, Noor Ahmed's performance lacked consistency and he failed to contain the run-rate.
