Shubman Gill close to becoming the world's No. 1 ODI batsman
The International Cricket Council (ICC) decides which batsman is number 1 and which is number 10 in international cricket. The ICC periodically releases player rankings across all formats. These rankings include separate rankings for batsmen, bowlers, and all-rounders. Following the first ODI between India and England, the ICC has released the latest ODI rankings for batsmen. In the latest update, Indian captain Shubman Gill is on the verge of becoming the world's number 1 batsman in ODIs.
Shubman Gill played a brilliant innings of 80 runs in the first ODI played at Edgbaston. He is currently ranked second, but has moved closer to the number one spot. Currently, New Zealand's Daryl Mitchell holds the top spot in ODIs. However, there is not much difference between Mitchell and Gill's points.
In the latest rankings, Daryl Mitchell has 814 rating points, while Shubman Gill has 803. Gill is only 11 rating points behind Mitchell, who is ranked number one. This gives Gill a great chance to become the number one batsman. A strong performance in the second ODI against England could propel him to the world's number one ODI batsman.
In the latest ICC rankings, India's Virat Kohli is at number three and Rohit Sharma is at number four. Afghanistan's Ibrahim Zadran is at number five. West Indies' Shai Hope is at number six, and Pakistan's Babar Azam is at number seven. Ireland's Harry Tector is at number eight, Sri Lanka's Charith Asalanka is at number nine, and Kusal Mendis is at number ten.
In the bowlers' rankings, Afghanistan's Rashid Khan is in first place, Pakistan's Abrar Ahmed in second, South Africa's Keshav Maharaj in third, England's Jofra Archer in fourth, and Sri Lanka's Mahish Theekshana in fifth. England's Adil Rashid is in sixth, New Zealand's Mitchell Santner in seventh, India's Kuldeep Yadav in eighth, Pakistan's Shaheen Afridi in ninth, and Bangladesh's Mehidy Hasan Miraz in 10th.
