Why Harshit Rana Got a BCCI Central Contract Despite Not Meeting the Match Criteria

The BCCI’s central contract list has once again sparked conversations — this time for the inclusion of Harshit Rana, who, by standard criteria, falls short of eligibility. As per BCCI rules, to qualify for a central contract, a player must have played either 3 Tests, 8 ODIs, or 10 T20Is within the contract period. Harshit Rana, with 2 Tests, 5 ODIs, and 1 T20I to his name, doesn’t check any of these boxes. So, why did he still make the list?

Here’s Why Harshit Rana Made the Cut:

1. BCCI's Equivalency Formula:

According to a former Indian cricketer close to the board, BCCI uses a match equivalency system where 3 ODIs are considered equivalent to 1 Test match in such borderline cases. Using this logic:

  • 5 ODIs ≈ 1.66 Tests
  • 1 T20I = no significant Test-equivalent value
  • With his actual 2 Tests, the adjusted total becomes 3.66 Tests, which crosses the 3-Test threshold.

So technically, Rana meets the eligibility through this internal conversion metric.

2. Upcoming Opportunities in Contract Window:

The 2024-25 contract period spans from October 1, 2024 to September 30, 2025, and we’re currently just halfway through it. BCCI might be projecting that Harshit Rana will cross the eligibility threshold before the contract cycle ends, especially with multiple series lined up. His involvement across all three formats supports this assumption.

3. Versatility Across Formats:

Harshit Rana is among the few young players who’ve already represented India in Tests, ODIs, and T20Is. This multi-format exposure often earns preference from selectors looking to invest in long-term prospects.

Harshit Rana’s Performance Snapshot:

  • Tests: 4 wickets in 2 matches
  • ODIs: 10 wickets in 5 matches
  • T20I: 3 wickets in 1 match

Despite being relatively new, his consistent performances and all-format adaptability have made a strong case for his inclusion.

Contract Grade and Benefits:

Harshit has been slotted into Grade C, which comes with:

  • Annual salary of ₹1 crore
  • Access to BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (COE) for medical and training support
  • Full travel and accommodation privileges for matches and camps
