Who are dying from Corona virus, are pre-existing diseases in the body the reason?

According to new research and recent WHO reports, some people are at a higher risk of death from COVID-19. In fact, these include people over 60 years of age.

Corona virus cases are being found continuously in many countries of the world. In India too, people suffering from new variants of this virus are constantly coming forward. As of June 2, 3758 active cases have been found in India. At the same time, 32 people have lost their lives. A 22-year-old girl is also included in these. Let us know who are dying from the Covid-19 virus? Are the diseases already present in the body the reason behind this?

Who is at greater risk of death from Covid-19?

According to new research and recent WHO reports, some people are at higher risk of death from Covid-19. In fact, these include people over the age of 60. During 2020, research was done on 44,000 cases in China. It was revealed that the mortality rate among people over 80 years of age was 10 times higher than in the middle age group. New research also found that new variants such as JN.1 and NB.1.8.1 can also have more serious effects on the elderly.

How dangerous are pre-existing diseases?

According to WHO, the risk of death from COVID-19 increases manifold due to pre-existing health problems. According to ICMR guidelines, if blood sugar is uncontrolled in diabetic patients, the body's immunity against COVID-19 becomes weak. Actually, this increases the inflammation caused by the virus and damages other organs including the lungs. At the same time, heart diseases such as high blood pressure, coronary artery disease or heart failure increase the problems caused by COVID-19. Let us tell you that this virus puts pressure on the heart muscles, which increases the risk of heart attack or stroke.

There is also a problem in these diseases

People suffering from diseases like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma or TB have low lung capacity. If such people get infected with COVID-19, the risk of death increases. At the same time, COVID-19 can be serious in patients with chronic kidney disease or dialysis dependent patients, as it affects the functioning of the kidneys more. Cancer patients, especially those undergoing chemotherapy, have a weak immune system, which reduces the ability to fight the corona virus.

These people are at greater risk

A research has revealed that men are at a higher risk of death from Covid-19 than women. The reason for this could be hormonal differences and the smoking habit in men. According to WHO's 2020 research, the mortality rate in men was found to be 1.5 times higher than that of women.

Are pre-existing diseases the real cause of death?

According to a 2024 report by ICMR, more than 80% of deaths due to COVID-19 occurred in people who already had one or more serious illnesses. Actually, due to these diseases, the corona virus becomes more dangerous. Let us tell you that diabetes, heart disease and obesity increase chronic inflammation in the body, which makes the cytokine storm (excessive inflammation) caused by COVID-19 more severe. At the same time, COVID-19 mainly affects the lungs. If someone already has lung diseases, then their breathing ability is affected. Apart from this, a weak immune system is unable to stop the corona virus , increasing the risk of pneumonia, ARDS and multi-organ failure.
