Cervical pain i.e. neck pain has become a very common problem in today's time. This pain is caused by a disorder in the neck bones (cervical vertebrae), muscles, nerves or discs. The spine of the neck, called the 'cervical spine', works to support and rotate our head. When there is swelling, stretching or pressure in it, then pain begins, which is called cervical pain.

The main cause is cervical disc herniation , in which the soft disc between the spinal cord comes out. The pain can spread not only in the neck but also in the shoulders, arms and sometimes even the fingers. Sometimes strain or injury to the neck muscles, such as a sudden jerk (such as whiplash) can also increase cervical pain. In some cases, mental stress is also the cause of cervical pain, because in a state of stress the muscles become stiff.

What are the symptoms of cervical pain?

Dr Akhilesh Yadav, Unit Head in the Orthopedics Department at Max Hospital, explains that cervical pain causes stiffness or tightness in the neck. Pain in the back of the head or in the form of headache, pain or numbness in the shoulders, arms or hands, difficulty in turning the neck, sometimes tingling or weakness in the hands. Symptoms like dizziness or balance problems (sometimes) on getting up and walking, fatigue or feeling of heavy head are seen in most cases.

The most common causes of cervical pain are

1. Sitting or working in wrong posture .

2. Continuously hunching over the computer.

3. Using the mobile phone by looking downwards for hours.

4 Sleeping with your neck bent without any support.

5. High or very hard pillow can also cause neck pain.

6 It is an age-related disease in which the bones of the neck get worn out.

These habits put extra pressure on the muscles and nerves of the neck. Over time, this pressure can become severe, causing gradual wear and tear on the discs and joints of the spine.
