What did the person who designed the rupee symbol say about the Tamil Nadu government's decision?

The language controversy in Tamil Nadu is gaining momentum over the rupee symbol. The new rupee symbol has been included in the budget to be presented in the assembly today, which is in Tamil. Uday Kumar, who created it, has put forth his side.

The language controversy is gaining momentum after the removal of the rupee logo in the Tamil Nadu budget. In such a situation, Professor D Uday Kumar of IIT Guwahati, who designed the rupee logo, refused to get into the language controversy just hours after the Tamil Nadu government released a new rupee logo for the state budget. He said that it is just a coincidence that his father was a DMK MLA.

A controversy had already erupted in Tamil Nadu over the language. Meanwhile, the state's Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) government has used a Tamil letter instead of the Indian rupee symbol in the logo released on Thursday for the budget for the financial year 2025-26. This budget will be presented in the assembly today.

The government felt the need for change

Professor D Udaya Kumar said that it is the government that suddenly felt that there is a need for change and they want to implement their script. It is up to the state government. Therefore, I have nothing to say about this. It is completely up to the government. Kumar's father N Dharmalingam was a DMK party MLA from Rishivandiyam constituency in 1971. He said that my father was an MLA even before my birth. Now he has grown old and is living his life peacefully in our village. It was just a coincidence.

He said that it is just a coincidence that he was a DMK MLA and the DMK government changed the design. I don't see anything else apart from this, it is a different coincidence that has happened. The first letter of the Tamil word Rubay has been inscribed as Rs in the logo brought by the state government in the budget.

Indian currency is called Rubay in Tamil language. The logo also says 'Everything for all', indicating the claim of the ruling DMK's model of governance in the state to be inclusive.

The design I made was based on some requirements sought by the government. It was a competition organised by the Government of India. I participated in it and my design was selected in the competition, and then it was implemented, he said.
