The northern regions of India are witnessing a rapid shift in weather patterns, with winter almost coming to an end. However, snowfall and rain are expected to continue over the western Himalayan region. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), light to moderate rain and snowfall will affect Jammu & Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and parts of Pakistan till March 16. Thunderstorms with lightning have also been predicted in these areas. Meanwhile, the plains are experiencing a sharp rise in temperatures, with forecasts indicating that some places may touch 40°C in the coming days.
Delhi-NCR: Rising Temperatures and Worsening Air Quality
Delhi-NCR experienced cloudy weather and light showers during Holi, but the heat is now returning. On March 14, the maximum temperature soared to 36.2°C, making it the hottest day of 2025 so far—7.3°C above normal levels. IMD warns that temperatures will climb further next week, bringing intense heat.
The Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi was recorded at 193 on March 15, placing it in the "moderate" category. However, pollution levels are expected to rise again due to increasing temperatures.
Uttar Pradesh: Temperatures Near 40°C
Despite earlier forecasts predicting rain, most of Uttar Pradesh remains dry and hot. Strong sunlight has pushed temperatures above 35°C in many districts. Varanasi recorded the highest temperature at 39.9°C, and further heat escalation is expected in the coming days.
Rajasthan: Light Rain and Hailstorm
Some parts of Rajasthan received light rain and hailstorm, leading to a drop of 1-3°C in temperatures. Rainfall was reported in Bharatpur, Sikar, Alwar, and Dholpur. However, the heat continues, with Kota recording 39.1°C. IMD has issued warnings for strong winds and further hailstorms in the coming days.
Himachal Pradesh: Snowfall and Rain Keep Cold Conditions Intact
Several areas in Himachal Pradesh, including Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, and Shimla, witnessed rain and snowfall. Lahaul-Spiti is expected to receive heavy snowfall, ensuring that winter conditions persist in higher altitudes.
Bihar: Heatwave Expected Soon
Bihar is currently witnessing dry weather, but temperatures are set to rise in the coming weeks. By the end of March, some regions might hit 40°C. Western disturbances could bring cloudy skies, but the chances of rain remain low. IMD has also warned of potential heatwaves in the state.
Kashmir Valley: Fresh Snowfall Increases Cold
Several regions in Kashmir, including Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian, Pulwama, Gulmarg, Sonamarg, and Pahalgam, received fresh snowfall on March 15. Snowfall in higher altitudes is expected to continue, keeping temperatures low and increasing the cold wave effect in the region.
