UPSC EPFO APFC Vacancy 2026: Category-Wise Breakup
UPSC has announced 80 APFC vacancies under Vacancy No. 26085201722.
The category-wise distribution is:
| Category | Number of Vacancies |
|---|---|
| Unreserved (UR) | 29 |
| OBC | 18 |
| SC | 15 |
| ST | 10 |
| EWS | 8 |
| Total | 80 |
Out of these 80 posts, three vacancies are reserved for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD) under the applicable categories.
What Is the Educational Qualification?
The minimum educational qualification is relatively straightforward.
Applicants must possess a degree from a recognised university or an equivalent qualification. This means candidates from different graduation streams can apply, provided their degree satisfies UPSC's eligibility conditions.
UPSC has also listed a Diploma in Company Law, Labour Laws or Public Administration as a desirable qualification. However, this is not the basic mandatory educational requirement.
Candidates should ensure that they fulfil all eligibility requirements by the closing date of the application.
What Is the Age Limit for APFC Recruitment?
The upper age limit differs according to category.
For UR and EWS candidates, the maximum age is 35 years. The upper age limit is 38 years for OBC candidates and 40 years for SC and ST candidates. PwBD candidates are eligible for further relaxation as specified in the notification, subject to the prescribed maximum limit.
Other age relaxations, including those available to eligible government employees and ex-servicemen, will be governed by UPSC rules.
Salary Will Be Under Pay Level 10
The Assistant Provident Fund Commissioner post carries Level 10 in the Pay Matrix under the 7th Central Pay Commission.
The post has been described as permanent and belongs to Central Board Group A, Non-Ministerial, equivalent to a Group A Central Government post at the corresponding pay level.
Selected candidates will have a one-year probation period. The headquarters is New Delhi, but the appointment carries All India Service liability, which means officers can be posted anywhere in the country.
What Does an Assistant Provident Fund Commissioner Do?
An APFC performs a wide range of administrative and statutory functions within EPFO.
According to the official notification, responsibilities may include work related to enforcement, recovery, accounts, administration, legal matters, pensions and cash management.
The job can also involve conducting inquiries, processing claims, handling administrative functions, maintaining financial records and preparing management information reports.
Application Window Opens on August 22
UPSC will accept online applications from August 22, 2026.
Candidates need to apply through the Commission's Online Recruitment Application portal. The deadline is 6 PM on September 11, 2026. UPSC has advised applicants not to wait until the final day to submit their forms.
The Commission's updated application system includes account creation, Universal Registration and a Common Application Form before the recruitment-specific application is completed.
Once registered, candidates receive a Universal Registration Number (URN), while a separate application number is generated for the specific recruitment.
Application Fee Is ₹25 for Most Male Candidates
The application fee is ₹25 for candidates who are not covered by the fee exemption.
Female candidates and applicants belonging to SC, ST and PwBD categories do not have to pay an application fee. However, UR, OBC and EWS male applicants are required to pay the full prescribed fee.
Payment can be made online using debit card, credit card, UPI or internet banking.
Recruitment Test Will Be Held on December 20
One major detail missing from several early reports is that UPSC has already announced the date of the written examination.
The pen-and-paper Recruitment Test will be conducted on December 20, 2026. Candidates who qualify at this stage will be shortlisted for interview.
The Recruitment Test will be an objective-type examination and will last for two hours.
Questions will carry equal marks, and the paper will be available in both English and Hindi. There will also be negative marking, with one-third of the marks assigned to a question deducted for every incorrect answer. No penalty will apply to unanswered questions.
What Will Be Asked in the APFC Exam?
UPSC has listed a broad syllabus covering several areas relevant to the APFC role.
Topics include General English, Indian culture and freedom movements, Indian economy, governance and the Constitution, general science, basic computer knowledge, mathematics, statistics, mental ability, industrial relations, labour codes, social security, accountancy, auditing, insurance and current affairs.
Candidates should therefore prepare for a combination of general awareness, aptitude and subject-specific areas related to labour administration and social security.
Written Test and Interview Will Both Count in Final Selection
The Recruitment Test carries 300 marks, while the interview carries 100 marks.
UPSC has specified a 75:25 weightage between the Recruitment Test and the interview respectively. This means performance in the written test will have a substantially larger impact on the final merit position.
The minimum suitability benchmark at the interview stage is listed as 50 marks for General/EWS candidates, 45 for OBC candidates and 40 for SC, ST and PwBD candidates.
How to Apply for UPSC EPFO APFC Recruitment 2026
Candidates should first visit UPSC's Online Recruitment Application portal and complete the required account and Universal Registration details. After logging in, they can select the APFC vacancy, fill in their educational and personal information, upload the required documents and complete the fee payment where applicable.
Applicants should carefully review every field before final submission because UPSC has warned that incorrect information can result in rejection and may also lead to debarment in serious cases.
Candidates are not required to send a printed copy of the application to UPSC after submitting the form online. However, they should retain a copy because shortlisted candidates will need to produce the application and supporting documents at the interview stage.
Key Dates Candidates Should Remember
The application window opens on August 22, 2026, and closes at 6 PM on September 11, 2026. Eligibility will also be determined with reference to the closing date. The Recruitment Test is scheduled for December 20, 2026, while the interview schedule will be announced separately.
