As diplomatic tensions between India and Pakistan reach a boiling point following the deadly Pahalgam terror attack, the arrival of Turkish Navy warship TCG BÜYÜKADA at Karachi Port has drawn international attention.
The ship, part of Türkiye’s naval fleet, received a ceremonial welcome from officials of both Turkish and Pakistan Navies on Sunday, according to a press release from Pakistan’s Directorate General Public Relations (DGPR). The official line is that the vessel is on a “goodwill visit” aimed at enhancing professional ties and maritime cooperation between the two navies.
Strategic Optics Amid Crisis
While both sides framed the visit as routine, the timing has raised eyebrows. The presence of a Turkish military ship in Pakistan’s waters comes just days after India took strong retaliatory measures following the Pahalgam massacre, in which 26 people—25 of them tourists—were killed.
India has since:
- Suspended the Indus Waters Treaty
- Closed the Attari-Wagah Border
- Cancelled visas for Pakistani nationals
- Banned Pakistani goods and ships from Indian ports
In turn, Pakistan has also barred Indian-flagged ships from entering its waters.
Deepening Pakistan-Türkiye Ties
In its statement, Pakistan called the Turkish visit a reflection of the “deep-rooted mutual trust and strategic partnership between two brotherly nations.” The maritime ties are built on centuries of historical and cultural connection, officials said.
