During this conversation, Trump praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi and hinted at strengthening the economic partnership with India. He said, "PM Modi is a wonderful person and a friend of mine. We will make a good deal with India."
Positive stance on India-US trade deal
Trump has signaled a positive India-US trade deal during the ongoing World Economic Forum in Davos. The first formal discussions regarding a proposed bilateral trade agreement between India and the US took place during Prime Minister Modi's visit to Washington in February 2025.
The aim of this deal is to increase the current trade between the two countries from around $191 billion to $500 billion by 2030. This means that there was discussion about more than doubling the trade.
Suspense still looms over India-US trade deal
Discussions regarding a trade deal between India and the United States have been ongoing for a long time. However, no positive news has emerged so far. Trump has also not clarified when this agreement will be finalized. However, discussions have already taken place at various levels between the two countries.
Meanwhile, heavy tariffs on Indian products remain in place in the US market. Duties of up to 50 percent are levied on many goods shipped from India to the US. Trump has also threatened an additional 25 percent tariff on trade with Iran.
