World Heritage Day is celebrated every year on 18 April. The sole aim of celebrating this special day is to spread awareness among people around the world for the preservation of historical sites related to human civilization. This is the reason why in many places this day is also known as 'International Day for Monuments and Sites'. On this day, an attempt is made to make people realize how important historical places are for us. On this day, people around the world spread their awareness messages by visiting historical buildings and monuments, organizing conferences, round tables and newspaper articles.
Why is World Heritage Day celebrated?
World Heritage Day was started in 1982 by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS). The first World Heritage Day was celebrated in Tunisia. After this, in 1983 it got the approval of 'United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization' (UNESCO). World Heritage Day is celebrated across the world with a different theme every year since 1983.
This is how the site is selected
If UNESCO declares any monument or place as heritage, then the name of that place becomes very famous in the world. Due to which the traffic of foreign tourists also increases significantly, which directly benefits the country's economy. After being declared a World Heritage, special care is taken of that place and its security is also increased. If this monument is in a country whose economic condition is not good, then UNESCO takes the responsibility of the care and protection of the monument.
The International Council on Monuments and Sites and the World Conservation Union are two organizations that assess whether a site is worthy of becoming a World Heritage Site or not. Once a year a committee meets and selects the places for this topic. After selecting the place, both the organizations recommend it to the World Heritage Committee.
