Pavagadh Hill
The Pavagadh hill is located within a plain in Panchmahal district, Gujarat, western India. About 500 million years ago there was a volcanic eruption in this region and the etymology of Pavagadh is linked to this eruption—Pava-garha means a quarter hill or fire hill. At its base is the historic town of Champaner, while the hill station of Pavagadh was built on the volcanic cone itself. Along with Champaner, the Pavagadh hill forms the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site spread over an area of over 1,329 hectares (3,280 acres). Known for its forts, there are dozens of heritage structures on the hill as well. The site is 50 kilometers (31 mi) east of Vadodara and 68 kilometers (42 mi) south of Godhra.

A faith-based legend is prevalent around the Pavagadh formation. Sati's right foot is believed to have fallen at Pavagadh, thus creating a deep valley and the Lord later sent a large hill to fill this deep valley as requested by sage Vishwamitra so that the sage's sacred cows would not fall into it. The Kalika Mata Temple at Pavagadh is one of the holiest Shaktipeeths in the Indian subcontinent.
