Recently, the royal cemetery of Assam has got the status of World Heritage. Today on 28th July, PM Modi mentioned the royal cemetery of Assam in Mann Ki Baat. Let us also tell you about the history of this historical site, which is called the Pyramid of Assam.

Pyramids like Egypt in and India

In the history of Assam, there is a description of the Ahom dynasty. The cemetery of the royal family is based on the mound burial system, which is called Moidams. Moidams are located in Choraideva, Assam, which is preserved through huge architecture. It is somewhat similar to the way the pharaohs of ancient Egypt were buried in pyramids. Therefore, Moidams are also called the pyramids of Assam.

History of Ahom community

Northeast India was inhabited by people of the Ahom dynasty, who arrived here in the 13th century. They established Choraideva as their first city and the site of the royal necropolis. The Ahom dynasty dominated Assam for 600 years. The first king of Ahom, Chow-Lung Siu-Ka-Pha, was buried in Charaideo. Since then, the practice of burying the kings, queens princes, and princesses of Tai-Ahom started at this place.

Moidam of Charaideo

This is considered a sacred place by the Ahom community. An Ahom ruler or dignitary is buried in every Moidam of Charaideo. It is said that valuable artifacts and treasures are preserved along with their remains.

Structure of Moidam

Moidam has three parts. First is the underground room or vault where the body of the deceased is kept. The second is a semicircular mound to cover the room, called Ga-Moidam, and the third part is a brick structure built on the mound, called Dol.

There are about 90 mounds in Charaideo. When officials of the Archaeological Survey of India excavated Moidam 2, many artifacts were found. This included decorative items made of ivory and wood.
