The region is home to many centuries-old temples which are a great example of the craftsmanship, devotion and architecture of ancient India. Let's know about these temples
1. Ramanathaswamy Temple - Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu
Located on Rameswaram Island, Ramanathaswamy Temple is one of the most revered and ancient temples in South India. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it is part of the Char Dham pilgrimage.
2. Venkateshwara Temple - Tirumala, Andhra Pradesh
Located in Tirupati district, Venkateshwara Temple is dedicated to Lord Venkateshwara, a form of Vishnu. Its origin is more than a thousand years old.
3. Brihadeeswarar Temple – Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu
A marvel of Chola architecture, the Brihadeeswarar Temple was built over 1,000 years ago by King Rajaraja Chola I.
4. Meenakshi Amman Temple – Madurai, Tamil Nadu
Located in the heart of Madurai, the Meenakshi Amman Temple is dedicated to Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar (Shiva). This ancient temple is an architectural wonder, with huge gopurams (gateways) adorned with thousands of colourful sculptures.
5. Padmanabhaswamy Temple – Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala
This historic temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu in his Ananta Shayana (eternal sleep) posture. The Padmanabhaswamy Temple is not only one of the oldest temples in South India, but is also known for its secret vaults and immense wealth.
