While the 2025 IPL season has been rough for Rohit Sharma, the veteran cricketer has something to cheer about off the field. Amid a string of poor performances with the bat and a struggling Mumbai Indians team, reports suggest that Rohit is likely to receive a major honour in his home city — a stadium stand named after him at Mumbai’s iconic Wankhede Stadium.
IPL Struggles Continue for Rohit and Mumbai Indians
Rohit Sharma, often hailed as one of India’s greatest white-ball players, is having a forgettable IPL season so far. The former MI captain has failed to deliver with the bat in all four matches he’s played, and his team’s fortunes have mirrored his slump. Mumbai Indians have lost four out of five games, including a match they seemingly had in the bag against Bangalore.
Despite the on-field disappointments, the 36-year-old has received news that could mark a significant milestone in his legacy.
Wankhede Stand Could Be Named After Rohit Sharma
According to a report in The Indian Express, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) recently held a council meeting where the proposal to name a stand after Rohit Sharma was discussed. The idea has gained momentum, especially considering Rohit’s contributions to Indian cricket and his deep connection with Mumbai.
Rohit has been instrumental in India’s recent ICC triumphs and is one of the most decorated cricketers from Mumbai — following in the footsteps of greats like Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar, whose names already grace the Wankhede stands.
Other Names Also in the Running
While Rohit Sharma’s name is strongly being considered, several other prominent figures have also been discussed. These include Sharad Pawar, Vilasrao Deshmukh, Ajit Wadekar, Eknath Solkar, Dilip Sardesai, Padmakar Shivalkar, and Diana Edulji — all individuals who have significantly contributed to Mumbai or Indian cricket in different capacities.
Decision Expected on April 15
The final decision is likely to be made during the MCA’s Annual General Meeting on April 15. Currently, the East Stand of Wankhede is named after Sunil Gavaskar, the West Stand after Vijay Merchant, and the North Stand after Dilip Vengsarkar and Sachin Tendulkar. The media gallery is named in honour of Bal Thackeray.
In 2022, the MCA also decided to install a statue of Sachin Tendulkar inside the stadium, further cementing the tradition of celebrating cricketing legends.
If the move goes through, Rohit Sharma's name will forever be etched in Mumbai cricketing history, not just for his performances, but for inspiring generations to come.
