The highest number of HIV infection cases in India has been recorded in Mizoram. The rate of HIV infection in the state has reached 2.73 percent, which is much higher than the national average of 0.2 percent.
According to a report released on Monday, Mizoram has so far recorded 32,287 HIV positive cases, out of which 5,511 people have died. Apart from this, 1,769 new HIV cases have been reported in the state between April 2024 and January 2025.

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a dangerous virus that weakens the body's immune system. Due to HIV, an HIV positive person can develop AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome), which is a lifelong disease and there is no cure for it.

HIV is transmitted primarily through body fluids such as sperm, blood, vaginal discharge, and breast milk. It can be transmitted exclusively during sexual intercourse, by sharing needles, or through childbirth and breastfeeding.
HIV infection is increasing rapidly in Mizoram
The increase in the rate of HIV infection in Mizoram has put the state government in serious concern. Health Minister Lalrinpuii said about this serious situation that the rate of HIV infection in Mizoram is much higher than the national average, and immediate action is needed to control it. The state government and the health department have also resolved that better facilities will be provided for the treatment and care of HIV infected people in the coming days.
