A Times of India report discussed Pant's potential swap with Kuldeep Yadav. Lucknow acquired Pant for ₹27 crore in the 2025 mega auction, making him the most expensive player in the tournament's history.

After acquiring him for a hefty sum, the franchise also entrusted Pant with the captaincy. However, Pant failed to live up to his price tag in both batting and captaincy. In the 2025 season, he scored 269 runs for Lucknow. Then, in the following season, 2026, Pant scored 312 runs.

Rishabh Pant decided to step down from captaincy after the Lucknow Super Giants were eliminated from the IPL 2026 playoff race. The franchise shared an official release announcing Pant's resignation. It was reported that Pant had requested the franchise to remove him from captaincy duties, and the team accepted.
