This brain disease can occur due to poor gut health, US researchers claim

MS and Gut Bacteria Connection : Gut microbiome, that is, the microbes present in the intestine, play an important role in increasing a disease called Multiple Sclerosis (MS). It is an autoimmune disease that affects our central nervous system. This has come to light in a study, which can help in understanding why some people get this disease?

Impact of Gut Bacteria on MS : Our gut contains trillions of bacteria and other microorganisms, which together are called the microbiome. These organisms live in our digestive system and affect our health. Researchers at Yale University in the US found that the amount of certain types of bacteria in the gut of MS patients is different from that of normal people. Also, the number of bacteria covered by an antibody called "immunoglobulin A (IgA)" was also found to be less in these patients.

American researchers claim

According to Associate Professor Erin Longbrake, lead scientist of the study, “When MS patients have fewer IgA-covered bacteria, it indicates that the balance between their body and intestinal organisms is disturbed. It is possible that environmental regions cause changes in intestinal bacteria, which increases the risk of developing MS.”

Test done on 43 people

This study has been published in the journal "Neurology Neuroimmunology and Neuroinflammation". It included 43 people who had recently developed MS and had not yet started any treatment. They were compared with 42 healthy people. Examination of their stool samples showed that MS (multiple sclerosis) patients had fewer bacteria called 'Faecalibacterium', while MS patients without treatment had more bacteria called 'Monoglobus'.

Comparison with healthy people

Of these 43 patients, 19 were given a treatment called "B-cell depletion therapy", which destroys the cells of the body's immune system that contribute to autoimmune diseases. Six months after treatment, when their stool samples were taken again, their gut microbiome became like that of healthy people.

Professor Longbreak said that this study helps to understand how this drug works in the treatment of MS. Through this, it can also be known why some people get MS, while others remain safe from it.
