Claude Mythos Threats: Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman held a high-level meeting with the heads of public and private sector banks on Thursday. During the meeting, she discussed Anthropic's Claude Mythos model and its potential cybersecurity risks. Claude Mythos is claimed to be the most advanced AI model in terms of cybersecurity.
The official account of the Ministry of Finance on X reported that Nirmala Sitharaman warned stakeholders about the potential impact of Claude Mythos. The post stated that Mythos poses several unprecedented risks, requiring a very high level of vigilance, preparedness, and improved coordination between financial institutions and banks.
What is Claude Mythos?
The most powerful AI model ever created was created by a company called Anthropic. According to the company, this model is so adept at cybersecurity that it is being kept out of reach of the general public. The company says that Mythos is adept at finding and exploiting small cybersecurity flaws in banking systems that are beyond human reach.
When the internet and operating systems were being developed in the 1990s, security wasn't given much attention. These flaws are now buried within old code, which Mythos AI can uncover. It's capable of deeply examining older operating systems or web browsers. Anthropic has said that making it widely available would be like putting advanced hacking capabilities in the hands of anyone with a laptop.
What are its dangers?
As a result, Anthropic has only granted access to Cloud Mythos to a select group of around 40 companies, including Amazon, Microsoft, and Google. However, according to reports, an unauthorized group of users gained access to Mythos, which could allow them to exploit cybersecurity flaws.
In such a situation, the government has advised banks to strengthen their walls so that if there is an attack or anything suspicious is noticed, it can be immediately reported to other banks. The Finance Minister also says that this AI model could be used to steal money from banks or obtain personal information about customers.
The Indian government isn't the only entity monitoring Mythos. According to reports, the US government has also engaged in discussions with various Wall Street banks to implement similar measures. The White House is also likely planning to use Mythos to strengthen cybersecurity across its various agencies.
