The food plate is changing! Now the emphasis is on protein and nutrition, along with taste.

Food preferences in India are rapidly changing. Demand for protein, plant-based foods, nutraceuticals, and healthy foods is increasing. What's about to change on your plate?

The changing diet of Indians

Your meal plan could be quite different in the future. People are no longer choosing food solely for its filling or taste, but are also considering its protein content, nutrients, and health benefits. The impact of this preference is now being felt in India's food sector. Demand for plant-based proteins, functional foods, nutraceuticals, and natural ingredients has increased rapidly. This means that in the future, supermarkets and online grocery apps will offer food options that promise both taste and nutrition.

People have moved beyond counting calories and are now focusing on protein.

Until a few years ago, a healthy diet was often considered to mean a low-calorie diet, but the picture is changing. Food industry experts at FI India 2026 and Propack India 2026 in Mumbai reported that people are increasingly concerned with nutrition over calories. In particular, interest in protein has increased significantly.

According to Dr. Prabodh Halde, West Zone Chairman of the All India Food Processors Association, this is already impacting the purchasing power of young people, gym-goers, and fitness enthusiasts, as well as ordinary families. Along with traditional protein sources like lentils, soy, cheese, and milk, plant-based meats, protein drinks, protein snacks, and other high-protein foods are now becoming increasingly available.

Why is plant-based food on the rise?

Plant-based foods are products that use plant-based ingredients. These can include soy, peas, lentils, and other plant-derived proteins. According to Praveer Srivastava, executive director of the Plant-Based Foods Industry Association, the sector is growing at an annual rate of approximately 18% in India, compared to the global average of 7-8%.

Why is its demand increasing?

This is largely due to people becoming more conscious about their diets. Some want to reduce their meat intake, others are concerned about the environment, and others simply want to add new protein options to their diets. All of these factors are driving the demand for plant-based foods.

The plant protein market could double in 5 years.

The market for plant-protein ingredients in India is currently worth approximately ₹4,500 crore (approximately $1.5 billion). According to Yogesh Mudras, MD of Informa Markets in India, this market could double in the next five years. However, an interesting aspect is that currently, approximately 90% of plant-protein ingredients used in India come from abroad. If domestic production increases, Indian consumers could have more options for such products.

New healthy options are coming to your plate.

Functional foods and nutraceuticals are also part of this shift. Simply put, demand for food products that address specific health needs, in addition to general nutrition, is growing. This means that in the future, you may see more new products focusing on protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients in the market.
