TECH EXPLAINED: What is iPhone Liquid Metal? It will be used in the iPhone Fold; learn all the details.

What is Liquid Metal? Apple has been in the news for a long time regarding its first foldable iPhone and now a new leak related to it has surfaced, which has created a stir in the tech industry.

What is Liquid Metal: Apple has long been in the news for its first foldable iPhone, and now a new leak has created a stir in the tech industry. According to reports, Apple could introduce its first foldable iPhone by the end of this year. This device will feature a book-style folding design, but its most significant feature could be its material.

Liquid Metal with Titanium in iPhone Fold!

According to information shared by user "yeux1122" on the Korean platform Naver, Apple may use Liquid Metal in the iPhone Fold's hinge. The phone's body is likely to feature a titanium frame. If this proves true, the iPhone Fold will be Apple's first device to use Liquid Metal extensively.

What is Liquid Metal and why is it special?

Liquid Metal, technically known as Liquidmetal, is a unique amorphous metal alloy developed by a research team at the California Institute of Technology. Unlike conventional metals, it lacks a crystalline structure, making it stronger, more flexible, and more resistant to deformation even under repeated stress.

For this reason, Liquid Metal is considered extremely suitable for parts that bend, open and close for a long time.

Why is Liquid Metal necessary for a foldable iPhone?

The hinge is often considered the weakest part of foldable smartphones. Using a heavier material like stainless steel can make the phone thick and heavy. Liquid Metal, on the other hand, is both lightweight and incredibly strong.

Apple has already filed several patents related to the hinges and moving parts of foldable devices, including materials like Liquid Metal. This material maintains strength while remaining thin, which is essential for ultra-slim foldable designs.

The big reason for the ultra-slim design

According to reports, the iPhone Fold could be less than 5.6mm thick when unfolded. Creating a strong and reliable hinge for such a thin phone is a significant challenge. Liquid Metal could be a solution to this problem, as it offers greater strength in a smaller space.

Apple and Liquid Metal have a long-standing relationship

Apple and Liquid Metal's relationship isn't new. In 2010, Apple struck a special deal with Liquidmetal Technologies, granting the company an exclusive license to use the material in consumer electronics.

Until now, however, Apple has limited its use of Liquid Metal to small parts, such as SIM ejector tools. Using it on larger and more complex parts has been technically challenging, but the iPhone Fold could change that.

Possible features of the iPhone Fold

According to the information revealed so far, the iPhone Fold could feature a 5.5-inch external display and a larger 7.8-inch internal screen. Both displays will be OLED displays with a high refresh rate.

It's likely to feature a side-mounted Touch ID instead of Face ID. Performance could be driven by the upcoming A20 Pro chipset, which will be more powerful than the A19 Pro used in the iPhone 17 Pro.

Talking about the camera setup, it could have a total of four cameras, two selfie cameras (one for each screen) and a dual camera system on the back.

Launch timeline and expected price

Reports indicate that Apple may launch its first foldable iPhone in September 2026. This launch could happen alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.

  1. There's no official pricing information yet, but it's estimated that the iPhone Fold could cost around $2,400 in the US, which translates to approximately ₹2.15 lakh in Indian currency. If these leaks prove accurate, the iPhone Fold could become not only Apple's most expensive iPhone but also its most advanced.
