A report has claimed that 26/11 Mumbai terror attack mastermind Tahawwur Rana has been put on 'suicide watch' in a 14x14 feet cell on the ground floor of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) headquarters in Delhi after his extradition from the US. Quoting sources, the report said that 64-year-old Rana is under round-the-clock human and CCTV surveillance inside the Lodhi Road facility, which has been put under a tight security cover.
The Times of India report quoted a source as saying, "Rana has been kept in a 14x14 cell on the ground floor. He will only be allowed to use a soft-tip pen to write so that he does not harm himself."
The Pakistani-Canadian national was handed over to Indian authorities on Thursday and produced before a special court, which sent him to 18-day NIA custody. The authorities on Friday began questioning him about his alleged ISI links and his relationship with David Coleman Headley alias Dawood Gilani. Headley is suspected of helping activate sleeper cells in places like Delhi, Goa and Pushkar.
Political controversy erupted
Tahawwur Rana's extradition has triggered a political controversy, with the Congress attacking the Narendra Modi government for taking credit for it. Former Union minister P Chidambaram said, "While the Modi government is rushing to take credit for this development, the truth is far from their claims." Chidambaram said, "This extradition is not the result of a sham but a testament to what the Indian state can achieve when diplomacy, law enforcement and international cooperation are pursued sincerely and without any pretense." He attributed this progress to the groundwork done during the UPA era, "This is the result of a decade and a half of hard diplomatic, legal and intelligence efforts initiated by the UPA government in close coordination with the US."
