Swiggy, Zomato, and Uber will also get PF insurance; the government has formed a board.
Just before Diwali, the central government has taken a major step for gig and platform workers. The Ministry of Labor has established the National Social Security Board. This board will work for unorganized workers and gig workers such as those from Swiggy, Zomato, Uber, and Ola.
This board will design, monitor, and recommend targeted welfare schemes to bridge the social security gap. The board was established under the Code on Social Security 2020, which came into effect in November 2025. Labor Minister Mansukh Mandaviya will be its chairman. It is reported that nine old social security laws have been merged into one law to provide protections like pension and insurance to millions of unorganized and gig workers.
Who else will be included in the board?
- Central-State Government
- 5 representatives from large companies
- 5 worker representatives
- ESIC
- EPFO
- Civil Society
- and the people in the unions
How will the board work?
This board will meet at least three times a year and advise the central government on welfare schemes for gig workers. Where will the funding come from and how will it be spent? No new schemes have been announced yet; only a board has been formed to formulate future schemes.
The board has been mandated to design, monitor and recommend targeted welfare schemes to bridge the social security gap for millions of gig and platform workers as well as traditional unorganised workers.
Who are gig workers?
Gig workers are independent professionals who earn money by performing various tasks at will, away from the constraints of traditional employment. Platform workers are workers who use online apps or digital platforms like Zomato, Uber, or Ola to find and complete work. Social security for gig workers has long been in demand.
