Team India suffered a big setback before the match against Afghanistan on 11 October. Star batsman Shubman Gill will not play in India's second Cricket World Cup 2023 match against Afghanistan. Gill missed India's first World Cup match against Australia in Chennai on Sunday due to illness.

The Indian team reached Delhi from Chennai on Monday but Gill stayed back there. Before the Australia match, the BCCI said that Gill was unwell but did not elaborate on his illness.

In a fresh update, the board said, "Team India batsman Shubman Gill will not travel with the team to Delhi on October 9, 2023." Chennai will not be able to play in the team's next match against Afghanistan in Delhi on October 11.

"He will remain in Chennai and will be under the observation of the medical team." The right-handed Gill was replaced by Ishan Kishan for the Australia match, which India won by six wickets. Kishan, Rohit Sharma, and Shreyas Iyer were out. KL Rahul and Virat Kohli had a match-winning partnership of 165 runs without scoring. 24-year-old Gill has been in excellent form over the last 12 months and has five ODI centuries to his name this year.
