Shreyas Iyer Opens Up Before IPL 2025: ‘False Rumours Were Spread Against Me’

Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer has addressed the controversies surrounding him before the start of IPL 2025. Speaking in an interview with PTI, he stated that false perceptions were created against him, but he managed to prove himself through hard work. “Maybe a certain perception was created, or maybe I was typecast. But I always believed in my strengths and abilities,” Iyer said.

Criticism about his struggles against short-pitched bowling had been circulating for years, but his recent performances silenced the doubters. In his last eight ODIs, including the home series against England and the Champions Trophy, he batted at No. 4 and averaged 53. “Athletes need to keep evolving as the game changes. I’m happy that I stayed positive and trusted my process,” he added.

‘Batting at No. 4 Feels Natural’

Iyer emphasized that No. 4 is his preferred batting position, citing his success at the 2023 World Cup, where he scored 530 runs, and his recent top-scoring performance in the Champions Trophy. “I feel most comfortable at No. 4—it brings out the best in me,” he said.

During the Champions Trophy, Iyer played a crucial role in rotating the strike against spin bowlers. Reflecting on this, he credited his early experiences playing on slow, grassless wickets in Mumbai, which helped him develop strong footwork for such conditions.

A Possible Test Comeback?

Iyer has had a solid Test career, scoring one century and five half-centuries in 14 matches at an average of 37. When asked about his chances of returning to the Indian Test squad for the five-match series against England in June-July, he remained focused on the present. “I don’t want to overthink the future. Right now, my priority is to fulfill my role with Punjab Kings,” he said.

Life Beyond Cricket

Shreyas also spoke about his interests outside of cricket. “There’s more to life than just the game—family, friends, hobbies, and even magic tricks. I enjoy these breaks,” he shared.

As he gears up to lead Punjab Kings in IPL 2025, Iyer remains determined to let his performance speak louder than any past criticism.
