Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer is grabbing headlines this IPL season — not just for his stellar performances with the bat, but also for opening up about an emotional moment few knew about. In a heartfelt conversation with actress Sahiba Bali, Iyer revealed that he broke down in tears during a practice session just before the Champions Trophy in Dubai.
Despite being one of India’s top performers in the tournament and leading his IPL team with consistency, Iyer shared a moment of unexpected vulnerability that has caught fans by surprise.
“I Started Crying After Practice” – Iyer Gets Candid
While chatting with Sahiba Bali, who’s currently associated with the Punjab Kings franchise, Iyer was asked a simple yet revealing question: “When was the last time you cried?”
Iyer’s response was surprisingly emotional.
“I last cried during the Champions Trophy practice in Dubai. I wasn’t able to bat the way I wanted to in the nets, and I got extremely frustrated with myself. I got angry and then, I don’t know, I just started crying,” he said.
He added that despite having performed well in the preceding England series, the drastically different pitch conditions in Dubai caught him off guard.
“The first day of nets didn’t go well. I thought I’d be in rhythm, but the pitches in Dubai were completely different. I wanted to practice more, but my session ended. That’s when I really lost it.”
From Frustration to Fireworks
Though Iyer broke down during training, what followed was nothing short of a redemption arc. He roared back in the Champions Trophy with the bat, becoming India’s highest run-scorer in the tournament.
In five matches, Iyer smashed 243 runs, including two consecutive half-centuries against Pakistan and New Zealand. He also played a crucial knock of 48 runs in the final, helping India lift the ICC trophy for the first time in years.
Mission IPL: Eye on the Prize
Now, Shreyas Iyer is fully focused on leading Punjab Kings to their maiden IPL title. Under his leadership, Punjab has already picked up two strong wins, and Iyer’s form continues to be a key strength for the side.
Whether it’s breaking down in the nets or breaking records on the field, Shreyas Iyer is showing the full range of what it means to be a modern cricketer — vulnerable, driven, and relentlessly passionate.
