What to keep in mind while losing weight
According to dietitian Avni Kaul, founder of Nutri Activania, based in Saket, New Delhi, the approach to weight loss after age 60 shouldn't be the same as in youth. Many people at this age focus solely on the numbers displayed on the weight machine to lose weight. Experts say this approach doesn't reflect the true picture. The real goal in old age shouldn't be simply losing weight, but rather preserving muscle while reducing excess body fat.
As we age, our body's metabolism naturally slows. Therefore, consuming too few calories to rapidly lose weight can be detrimental. This can lead to a loss of muscle mass along with fat. Losing muscle mass can lead to decreased strength, a slower metabolism, and an increased risk of falls and bone fractures. Therefore, after 60, it's important to focus on maintaining muscle mass while reducing body fat.
Why is strength training important?
Exercise plays an important role in healthy aging. Resistance or strength training, in particular, can help maintain muscle strength. Experts recommend gradually increasing resistance exercises at least two to three times a week, depending on your ability.
This can include weight lifting, resistance bands, bodyweight exercises, or machine-assisted exercises. A systematic review of over 6,000 older adults found that resistance training improved muscle strength, muscle mass, and physical performance, especially when combined with proper nutrition. In addition, incorporating moderate-intensity cardio exercise may help improve heart health and reduce fat.
Attention will also have to be paid to diet
After the age of 60, the role of diet becomes even more important. Age-related muscle loss is called sarcopenia, which can slow metabolism. Therefore, eating too little or following a strict diet is not advisable, as this can accelerate muscle loss. According to experts, older adults generally need approximately 1.0 to 1.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight daily. However, in case of any medical condition, this amount should be determined as per the advice of a doctor or dietitian. Protein sources like eggs, fish, chicken, dairy products, soy, pulses, and lean meat can be included in the diet. Additionally, consume fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats, and keep the body hydrated.
