England ended the first day's play at 325 for 9. The second Ashes Test is being played at the Gabba in Brisbane, where Joe Root scored his 40th Test century. Joe Root and Jofra Archer shared a blistering 61-run partnership in 44 balls.

Opener Jack Crawley scored 76 for England, but Ben Duckett and Ollie Pope were dismissed without scoring. Crawley and Root rescued England from trouble with a 117-run partnership. Harry Brook was dismissed for just 31, while captain Ben Stokes was run out by Josh English with a brilliant throw.

Joe Root's historic century

Joe Root scored 135 runs at the end of the first day's play in the second Test against Australia. This was his 40th Test century. This is the first time in Test cricket history that Root has scored a Test century on Australian soil. Root achieved this feat 13 years after his Test debut.

Root-Archer made the Kangaroos cry.

England lost their ninth wicket at 264. At one stage, England were 273 for 9 after 69 overs. Joe Root and Jofra Archer then added 52 runs in the next five overs, batting explosively. Archer scored 32 runs off 26 balls and shared a 61-run partnership for the tenth wicket with Joe Root.

Mitchell Starc was Australia's most successful bowler, dismissing six batsmen in the first innings. Starc has been the most successful bowler in the series so far. He has taken 16 wickets in 43.5 overs.
