Ravichandran Ashwin on Rohit-Kohli Retirement: Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are only available for Team India in the ODI format. Both retired from T20 Internationals after the 2024 T20 World Cup. Then, in May, both suddenly said goodbye to Test cricket. Their Test retirements were a real shock to fans. Now, former Indian spinner R Ashwin has supported Gautam Gambhir, saying that if Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's time is over, what's wrong with that?
A report in the Navbharat Times quoted Ashwin as saying that Gautam Gambhir may have a point of view as a coach. He has the right to make decisions in the best interests of the team. Furthermore, Ashwin added that if Gambhir feels that the time of greats like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma is up, then what is wrong with that?
What did Ashwin say on his retirement?
Talking about his retirement, Ashwin said, "If anyone should have been angry with Gautam Gambhir, it would have been me because my time was over as soon as he became the coach. But we have to keep our ego aside and think. The coach's job is to secure the team's future. It is possible that in his eyes I may not have any future, and that is completely fine."
Ashwin said, "My biggest strength is making decisions at the right time. When I was dropped from the playing XI after the Perth Test, I knew my time was up. I am not one of those players who keep hovering around the team hoping for a comeback. I have achieved a lot in my career, and now it is right to leave the way for new people."
