Ranveer Singh Begins Shooting for ‘Pralay’ After Dhurandhar, Steps Into a Dark Post-Apocalyptic World

Ranveer Singh New Movie: After the massive attention surrounding Dhurandhar and Dhurandhar: The Revenge, Ranveer Singh is moving into a dramatically different cinematic space. The actor has begun work on Pralay, an ambitious post-apocalyptic action-survival thriller directed by Jai Mehta.

Recent reports confirm that filming has now commenced in Mumbai, with Kalyani Priyadarshan joining Ranveer in the project. Earlier reports had suggested an August or September start, but the production has now officially moved into its shooting phase.

The project has attracted considerable attention because it takes Ranveer into the zombie and survival-thriller genre, a relatively unusual space for mainstream Hindi cinema. Here's what is currently known about the film.

‘Pralay’ Takes Ranveer Singh Into a Post-Apocalyptic World

Pralay is being developed as a large-scale post-apocalyptic survival thriller. Reports surrounding the project describe a dystopian setting in which people struggle to survive as society collapses around them.

The story is expected to combine action and spectacle with a more human survival drama.

Rather than concentrating only on destruction and visual effects, the narrative reportedly revolves around characters trying to survive extreme circumstances while dealing with relationships, fear and emotional conflict.

Earlier reports have described the project as a zombie thriller set against a devastated Mumbai backdrop.

Shooting Has Started in Mumbai

One of the biggest updates is that Pralay has now entered production.

Ranveer Singh has begun shooting for the film in Mumbai, while Kalyani Priyadarshan has also joined the schedule. Kalyani recently expressed her excitement about starting work on the project.

This is notable because earlier reports about the production schedule had varied.

At different stages, reports suggested that filming would begin in August or September 2026 and that Australia would host a substantial portion of the shoot. (India Today)

More recent reports, however, indicate that the production has shifted its immediate focus to Mumbai.

Jai Mehta Is Directing the Film

Pralay is being directed by Jai Mehta, who has previously worked on acclaimed streaming projects.

Jai co-directed Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story and later directed Lootere. His move into a large-scale theatrical project is therefore generating considerable curiosity.

The film also has a personal connection to filmmaker Hansal Mehta, who is backing the project through True Story Films.

Hansal previously revealed that Ranveer himself approached Jai after being impressed by his work. According to him, the actor's conviction in the script and the filmmaker played an important role in moving the project forward.

Kalyani Priyadarshan Joins Ranveer Singh

Kalyani Priyadarshan will be seen alongside Ranveer Singh in the film.

Her involvement gives Pralay another interesting dimension, particularly as reports have suggested that the story places considerable importance on its central relationship rather than using the female lead merely as a supporting character.

The film has been described in previous reports as following a couple attempting to survive in a dystopian environment.

With production now underway, more details about Kalyani's character and the supporting cast could emerge as filming progresses.

Ranveer Singh Is Also Backing the Project

Ranveer's involvement with Pralay goes beyond playing its leading character.

The actor is also associated with the project as a producer through his banner Maa Kasam Films. Hansal Mehta and Sahil Saigal are also listed among the producers.

This makes the project particularly significant for Ranveer because he has a direct creative and production stake in bringing the film to the screen.

Reports have previously placed the film's budget at around ₹300 crore, although such figures should be treated as reported estimates unless formally confirmed by the producers.

If those estimates prove accurate, Pralay would rank among the biggest standalone projects of Ranveer's career.

Is ‘Pralay’ Based on a Book?

One of the rumours surrounding the film was that Pralay could be an adaptation of José Saramago's novel Blindness.

Hansal Mehta has rejected that claim.

He has said that Pralay is not an adaptation and that Jai Mehta and Vishal Kapoor developed an original story.

That clarification is important because the post-apocalyptic setting had led to comparisons with existing international books and films.

The makers appear to be developing their own fictional world rather than officially adapting an existing story.

Expect a VFX-Heavy Film

Creating a convincing post-apocalyptic environment will require substantial technical work.

Previous production reports have described Pralay as a VFX-heavy project, with the team spending considerable time developing its visual language and larger fictional universe.

For a zombie-survival film, visual effects could be required for everything from damaged city environments and large action sequences to creatures, crowds and scenes of destruction.

That makes post-production likely to be an especially important part of the filmmaking process.

A Major Genre Shift After ‘Dhurandhar’

Ranveer's recent work has kept him closely associated with large-scale action cinema, but Pralay could offer a substantially different screen experience.

Instead of another conventional action film, the project combines survival, zombies, dystopian drama and large-scale action.

It also potentially gives the actor a role built around both physical performance and emotional pressure, as his character attempts to survive in a world where normal social order has collapsed.

When Will ‘Pralay’ Release?

For now, the biggest confirmed development is that production has begun.

A final theatrical release date has not yet been firmly announced in the recent reports. Given the project's scale and expected visual-effects requirements, audiences may have to wait for the makers to reveal a formal release schedule.

With Ranveer Singh leading and producing, Jai Mehta directing and Kalyani Priyadarshan joining the cast, Pralay is shaping up as one of the more unusual big-budget Hindi films currently in production.

After the Dhurandhar films, Ranveer is clearly not stepping away from ambitious cinema—but this time, he is exchanging espionage-driven action for a much darker battle for survival.
