What was the matter
Swargate in Pune is one of the biggest bus depots of Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC). According to the victim, she was waiting for a bus to Phaltan in Satara district on a platform at around 5.45 am on Tuesday when Gade engaged her in conversation by calling her 'didi' and said that the bus for Satara had arrived on another platform.
He took her to an empty 'Shiv Shahi' AC bus parked at another place on the campus. Since the lights inside the bus were not working, she hesitated to board it. But the accused assured her that the same bus would go to Satara. The woman, who works in the medical field, told the police that Gade then followed her and raped her.
After the incident, Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik announced the removal of all junk buses and other vehicles parked at MSRTC depots before April 15, 2025. Addressing the media at the ministry, Sarnaik said that GPS, panic buttons and CCTV cameras will be installed in about 15,000 buses, including hired ones. Sarnaik said that the MSRTC has about 2,700 security guards and they are considering whether this number can be increased by increasing the number of women guards by 15-20 per cent.
