PlayStation Portal gets a major upgrade! The new model could feature an OLED screen.

The Sony PlayStation Portal could receive a major upgrade with a new model. The new Portal could see two new models with OLED screens. Find out what could change about this gaming device.

Sony PlayStation Portal OLED screen

In the gaming world, Sony may be preparing to advance its PlayStation Portal with a major upgrade. Information has emerged regarding a new model of the company's game streaming device, which is expected to feature an OLED screen. Notably, Sony is reportedly working on not one, but two new PlayStation hardware models. If a Portal with an OLED display arrives, it could significantly enhance the screen experience compared to the current model.

Information about two new models has surfaced.

This information regarding new PlayStation hardware has surfaced on X and comes from a filing with the Wi-Fi Alliance. The filing shows two devices with model numbers CFI-Y2000 and CFI-Y2105. The current PlayStation Portal model number falls in the CFI-Y100 series. Therefore, it's believed that these could be new-generation devices, not just minor modifications. However, the filing doesn't provide full specifications for these devices and doesn't explicitly state that these are new PlayStation Portal models.

Support for Android 15 and Wi-Fi 5

According to the filing, these devices are listed as Computer Entertainment Systems under the Gaming Console category. They are expected to run on the Android 15 operating system and offer dual-band Wi-Fi 5 connectivity. The devices also feature a 3.5mm headphone jack and USB charging.

OLED screens could be the biggest change

The new Portal is rumored to feature an OLED display. This could result in deeper blacks and improved contrast, particularly in dark gaming scenes. A report previously claimed that Sony was working on a PlayStation Portal with an OLED screen and that it could be launched before the end of 2026. The new filing appears to align with this timeline.

Will the new Portal be like the return of Vita?

Sony launched the PlayStation Vita in 2011, following the PSP. It featured features like a rear touch panel, but it didn't achieve the expected success. The company subsequently distanced itself from the handheld console market. The PlayStation Portal is different. It's neither a portable PS5 nor a direct rebrand of the Vita. It can stream games from the PS5 and also supports cloud gaming via a PlayStation Plus subscription. The new Portal, with its OLED screen, could give Sony's portable gaming device a fresh look and improved screen experience.
